Books: June Must-Reads

  • Walks with Men by Ann Beattie. A 22 year-old gets involved with a man twice her age as an intellectual experiment. However, intoxication quickly turns to disgust when she becomes wrapped up in the relationship and the non-stop city life of New York in the '80s.
  • Click: The Magic of Instant Connections by Ori and Rom Brafman. Psychologists have identified 5 "accelerators" that are present when people are fully engaged in the moment, and this book teaches you how to consciously induce those moments.
  • The Ice Princess by Camilla Lackberg. The first novel in a seven-book suspense series. It follows a 30-something protagonist when she returns home after her parents' death, however, the deaths are only just beginning.
  • Bitch is the New Black by Helena Andrews. Although Helena Andrews was fuming for the entire commercial break when she heard Tina Fey exclaim that "bitch is the new black" Helena realized, sometimes it's good to be bitchy, and so comes this book which is filled with essays about being young, black, "flawed, tired, naive, gutsy, frightened, and kind.
  • The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner's Semester at America's Holiest University by Kevin Roose. Kevin Roose left Brown University to investigate what exactly went on at Liberty (the largest Christian fundamentalist college in the US). Kevin knew he'd write something, but he didn't expect it to be this.
  • One Day by David Nicholls. With a film adaptation in the works, this book follows a together-but-not-together couple for TWO decades. However, you'll only read about one day of each year.
  • How Pleasure Works: The New Science of Why We Like What We Like by Paul Bloom. An informative, humorous, and engrossing look at why we're seduced, comforted, and captivated by people, objects, and art.
  • The Short and Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephanie Meyer. If Bree caught your attention in Eclipse than get ready for this novella that shows you the darker side of Twilight vampires...the side you don't see when they're sparkling.
