Beauty: Cosmetic Counter Hygiene

Dr. Elizabeth Brooks of Jefferson Medical College has conducted an extensive study on make up testers. Her research revealed that staph, Strep, and even E. coli bacteria on make up testers, and on high-traffic mall days (like a Saturday), the percentage of contamination is 100%. But even though Dr. Brooks has tested hundreds of make-up counters and seen the worst of it, she's not afraid of the make up samples. She knows how to handle them, and you can too with these tips:

  • Don't dip -- Whenever possible, use sample products that don't require finger dipping. Squeeze bottles of creams and glosses are a safer alternative.
  • Forgo communal tools -- Opt for disposable applicators instead of shared ones.
  • Wipe it clean -- Remove the top layer and wipe it with alcohol. NEVER use sample make up that you can't remove the top layer of.
  • Be mindful of where you apply -- Avoid any products that must be applied directly to the eyes, nose, or mouth, especially mascara.
  • Be your own healthy advocate -- If you don't see rubbing alcohol or disposable applicators, ask for them. Just because you don't see them, doesn't mean they're not there.
