Books: 10 Most Complained About Books

Wednesday the American Library Association released the 10 most complained about books and why. Here they are:

  1. The Chocolate War The 36-year old book is still being accused of foul language, sexual explicitness, nudity, and being unsuitable for it's age group. (It's classified as young adult.)
  2. The Color Purple Loathed for being sexually explicit and profane.
  3. The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things On Amazon it's recommended for grades 7-10, but of course, it's been labeled unsuited for it's age group and sexually explicit.
  4. My Sister's Keeper Homosexuality, drug use, and suicide has this decidedly adult book labeled as being unsuitable for it's age group.
  5. The Catcher in the Rye Holden Caulfield's potty mouth, sex-crazed 16 year-old imagination, and poor attitude has this book unsuitable for other 16 year-olds.
  6. Twilight It's religious view point and sexually explicit content has people complaining about it. (I didn't realize there was ANY thing religious in it.
  7. To Kill a Mockingbird Besides being one of the most valuable depictions of race relations in the south, it's totally offensive for the racism it tries to fight.
  8. The Perks of Being a Wallflower The book was banned from a 9th grade classroom for being too sexual. Other complaints were that it's anti-family, there's gay characters, people take drugs and say bad words. It's labeled young adult.
  9. And Tango Makes Three This terrible children's book has been banned more than once for featuring two same-sex penguins in a commited relationship and raising a child penguin.
  10. TTYL The most complained about book. It's been banished from at least one middle school library for profanity. Complaints range from nudity (emoticons?) and drugs to sexual explicitness and language.
