Mom: 9 Tips for Breastfeeding While Traveling

  1. Pick a Window Seat If you're traveling by plane, choose the window seats, and have your partner sit in the seat next to the isle to gain privacy.
  2. Wait to Wash The water in airplane bathrooms isn't clean enough to drink, so if you're pumping wait until you arrive at your destination before you clean your equipment.
  3. Sleep Be sure to sleep whenever you can, lack of it causes your milk flow to become reduced.
  4. Don't Forget to Hydrate The dry, recycled air on a plane causes you to become hydrated, so have plenty of water on board to keep you hydrated so your milk flow doesn't decrease.
  5. Bring a Manual Pump As much as you may love your electric double pump (I love mine), bring a manual, because you never know when you'll be able to get to another outlet.
  6. Keep a Light Blanket Handy The blanket will add extra privacy, and keep your little nurser from being distracted by everything around them.
  7. Pump Before the Trip Bringing already pumped milk will reduce the anxiety about finding a good place to nurse.
  8. Leave the Nursing Pillow at Home You may rely on one at home, but space is limited when traveling. A small airplane pillow wrapped in a blanket will work in the nursing pillow's place.
  9. Dress Properly Wearing a nursing top or button-down shirt will not only make it easier to nurse, but will also add privacy.
