Money: Expensive Wedding Traditions That Can Be Skipped

  • Pick a Venue with Heart, Not a Big Price Tag: If you have a relative with a decent sized yard or a very pretty garden, see about having your wedding ceremony there, and then move to a private room at a nice restaurant for the reception.
  • Pick the Essentials, Skip the Rest: Spend on the rings and the attire (or whatever you think you need the most), and skip the rest.
  • Ditch the Pricey Decor and DIY: Not only would you have the bonus of distinctive decor, it would be cheaper to do it yourself instead of buying pricey flower centerpieces. Plus, you could sell it on eBay afterwards.
  • Go No Host, and Use the Speakers: Put your wedding music on CD (or iPod playlist) and play it on loud speakers instead of having a DJ or band.
  • Create a New (and Less Pricey) Tradition: Make your own favors instead of buying little candies.
